American Woody Austin shot a 4-under par 68 Friday to grab the 36-hole lead at the Champions Tour's Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Golf Course in Kona, Hawaii.
On a day that saw the high scoring from Round 1 come back to earth a bit, the 55-year-old Austin posted five birdies and one bogey -- on the par-3 12th hole -- while first-round co-leaders Bernhard Langer of Germany and Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain struggled to keep pace while playing in the day's final pairing.
Austin finished the second round at 11-under 133, good enough for a one-stroke lead.
After picking up eight pars and a single bogey on the front nine, Langer, 62, came on strong at the end of his day, birdying Nos. 15 and 16 to finish the day at 2-under 70. He sits alone in second place at 10-under 134.
Jimenez, 56, was one stroke worse, shooting a 1-under 71 on Friday to sit tied for third and two strokes back at 9 under on a leaderboard filled with big names.
Tied with Jimenez is American Fred Couples, who shot a 4-under 68 to climb from sixth, where he began the day. Another stroke back is the trio of England's Paul Broadhurst (66), American Scott McCarron (69) and American Marco Dawson (69).
The round of the day belonged to Ernie Els, playing in his first Champions Tour event. After shooting an even-par 72 on Thursday, the 50-year-old South African shot a 7-under 65 on Friday to move into a tie for eighth.
Joining him are Wes Short Jr. (67), Ken Tanigawa (70) and another big name, John Daly (68).
