The Los Angeles Sparks acquired wing Gabby Williams in a trade with the Chicago Sky, who had put her on the full-season suspended list.

Heading to Chicago will be rookie Stephanie Watts and the rights to Leonie Fiebich.

Williams won't be able to contribute to the Sparks right away -- and that was her point of contention with the Sky.

She played in the WNBA offseason with Sopron Basket in Hungary and planned to stay in Europe to compete for the French national team in the Women's EuroBasket 2021 qualifying tournament. The event begins June 17 ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

The Sky wanted to retain her rights but move her off the active roster and put her on the suspended list. Williams didn't agree with the move, which would have kept her out of the WNBA season. The Sparks reportedly will keep her on the roster, allowing her to play in Los Angeles as soon as her commitment to the national team is over.

"We're excited to bring Gabby Williams into the L.A. Sparks organization," Sparks general manager and head coach Derek Fisher said in a news release. "At just 24 years old, Gabby is a versatile player who still has the potential to make a major impact in this league. She fits into what we're building in Los Angeles and we look forward to the future with her in a Sparks uniform."

Chicago made Williams, a 5-foot-11 guard, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 draft out of UConn. In her three seasons in the league, she has averaged 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Watts was the No. 10 selection in the 2021 draft and played at North Carolina last season. The 5-11 guard averaged 12.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

Fiebich, from Germany, was the No. 22 pick in the 2020 draft. She has yet to play in the WNBA.
