NEW YORK CITY, New York: Toyota's luxury brand Lexus has been named the most reliable auto among 28 brands evaluated by Consumer Reports for 2022.

Mazda, which dethroned Lexus in 2021, ranked second, Toyota ranked third, Infiniti fourth, and Buick fifth.

Tesla, Lincoln, Genesis and Mercedes-Benz are among the luxury vehicles that landed at the bottom of the Consumer Reports Auto Reliability Report for 2022.

The annual ranking uses data from more than 300,000 vehicles to project reliability scores for major brands and individual vehicles by assessing the past three years of each model's performance.

Lincoln was the least reliable brand for 2022, according to Consumer Reports, which ranked Tesla second-to-last. Other brands near the bottom were Jeep, Genesis, Volkswagen and Mercedes.

The Tesla Model Y, for instance, the company's most popular model, was one of the 10 least reliable vehicles of 2022, according to Consumer Reports, which revealed problems with its body fit, paint, weatherstripping, rear hatchback and climate system.

The rankings showed that brands with a more conservative approach to new features sold the most reliable rides, said Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports.

Brands like Lexus and Toyota "are always at the top, and they do it in proven ways," Fisher says. "They're very methodical when they introduce new technology, and they don't take chances," as quoted by USA Today.

Lexus had the most reliable vehicle in the 2022 rankings with the GX SUV, which has not been redesigned in more than a decade, while Mercedes-Benz had the most unreliable vehicle with the GLE.

High-tech transmission technology is among the new features causing reliability hiccups for some automakers, according to Consumer Reports.

Problems are common in 2022 among electric vehicles, but it is usually not the electric power train, Fisher says. Rather, the problems are seen in high-tech designs and interior features that often debut in electric vehicles to appeal to early adopters.

Although they did not make the list of the top 10 most reliable, several vehicles made by the traditional Detroit Three automakers were also among the most reliable in their segments.
